If the heads were off the car, would the headers go in relatively easy from the top??? Anyone ever do this??

Ah, yes

Ah, No. That would just be stupid to take half the motor apart to install headers.

NO, and if you have to do that to get the headers in, you should NEVER work on a car again. My first header install took 17 hours total time, from beginning to end, including getting all the old stuff out, till she was started up and running, mostly by myself. Since then I've done another LT header install, and it went much better (~12 hours total time). I could install a set of LTs from start to finish in one day, start in the morning, and have them ready for a fairly late dinner. But yeah, installing headers is more than just the header cost, just like installing a cam, the cam is the cheap part of the cam swap, same goes for any mod, it will cost much more than the part you are trying to install, unless it's something relatively simple.

I grinded a notch in my tranny brace and still got about a 1/4 inch of space between the 3 inch mandrel bent y-pipe that i made. Never done headers before or any major mechanical work. Took my sweet time and made sure everything was perfect. Rerouted some electrical wires and made some shields for my brakelines and used heat protected tape on all my wires and fuel lines. Did it with jack stands, and it was a bitch. Jacked the motor up 3 inches to get clearance for the passenger side. The hardest part was trying to hook up the egr on the drivers side on my jet-hots. I couldn't use the factorty rubber elbow for some reason. I estimated 25 hours.

Have fun and drag a 24 under the car with you.

Thats what I was getting at too. The heads are coming off anyways. I was thinking about waiting until then to finish because the car isn't going anywhere until march or april anyways.
