Can the engine run with trans disengaged?

Doing a tranny/converter swap and the bellhousing bolts won't even come out with air tools. Probably doesn't help the garage has been 30* for the past 2 weeks and that's where the car has been. I want to start the engine and let the block get warm to heat up the bellhousing bolts. The torque converter bolts are out and the converter is pushed back against the tranny so that it is not touching the flexplate. Would it be safe to start the engine? Would the transmission connectors have to be plugged into the tranny? Need help here.
