oil cooler delete

I've been searching for detailed instructions on removing my oil cooler. I understand what to do with the coolant hoses but I'm not sure if I just remove the adaptor and bolt the filter on. Will the bolt be too long or do I have to get a new bolt that the filter bolts on.

There is a different filter mount when you delete the cooler. It's held in place with two small bolts. You canfind them on Ebay for small change...

When I removed the cooler on my '94, I did not need to buy an oil filter adapter. My cooler was mounted to the oil filter adapter. I did have to replace a couple of studs, which are used to mount the adapter to the block when it's used in conjunction with the cooler, with bolts. I actually bought an oil filter adapter because I was told it was necessary, but it wasn't. Perhaps on later models it's different. I believe the cooler design changed beginning in '95.

Its a 1995 M6 with a little oil leak. I just put a 383 in and think I'm leaking oil from where the oil cooler mounts. It sounded easy enough to remove so I want to start with the easy possibilities first. If its not this its the pan gasket or rear main.

It is an o-ring if it is leaking. I replaced mine. You can get it at the dealer.

Does anyone know if I have to buy a new filter adapter or if I can use the stock parts. I have to change my oil and I would like to remove the cooler at the same time.
thanks in advance

Use the stock adapter. You will need 2 new bolts or cut the the tops off the old ones. It will make sense once you see it.

Re: oil cooler delete

I recently did this to my '95Z. I went to my hardware store and bought two bolts to replace the stock ones. Worked great. I'll pass on as I was told that you can also go to the M302 Mobil oil filter that holds almost a quart of oil!

Re: oil cooler delete

The confusion may be due to the fact there are two different oil cooler designs.

Re: oil cooler delete

Coolant flows through the outside of the cooler. Oil flows from 3 to 5 through the middle. That's an assumption. I've only physically seen the 94 setup.
