Talking Now I know how it feels when you cant stop grinning

Just started the car after my cam/ roller rocker install!!!
What a blast! I didn't realize I'd be so happy just to hear the engine roar to life like it did. Sure it took a few months, but I also tore the whole front end off, and had the headers recoated, along with powder coating the intake, accessory bracket, and waterpump black.

My wife keeps telling me to wipe that sh@t eating grin off my face!

I've got some noise from the Pro Magnum 1.6 roller rockers but am not sure yet if its normal or if I will need to readjust. I may learn to regret my choice of tall valve covers and OVC plug wires if I need to get in there to set the lash again..

That reminds me, time to email madz28 and arrange for a computer reprogram!!!

I'm so frickin geeked, I don't think I'll get any sleep tonight!

Man I'd love to share, hell half the neighborhood heard it tongiht!

I don't have a way of recording a clip though, my digital camera makes movies, but without sound.
What other ways/ methods are there to record??

A computer with a microphonie would work, but video is always nicer. Find a friend with a camera that knows how to work it.

LOL, funny to see that you are actually still up. Waiting axiously for someone to reply? I know when I get like that its exactly what I do.

I did the same thing when I finished my receint cam install. I even called up all my friends with the car idling so they could hear it. The best part was taking my friend for a ride, he gave me crap for a month while I was doing the install/waiting for parts.

Congrats!

The Pro-Mag 1.6 SA rockers are notorious for ticking. Sorta sound like a sewing machine? Checking them after you've heat cycled them and while warm is a good idea.

Yeah, it does sound like a sewing machine a bit.

Now that I think about it, my brother may have a camera with sound, Ill grab it Saturday and see if I can upload a vid or two...

BTW, what is the recommended tightening (past snug) for the 1.6 Pro Mags? I went with 1/4 turn past snug, however I've read since then that others have used 1/8?

It depends on the lifter...

For regular hydraulic roller lifters, 1/4-1/2 is good. For "Comp R" lifter, 0-1/8 is good.

I do it with the engine idling. I back the nut off to loosen the rocker until it clacks like crazy. Then I slowly tighten the nut until i dont here the clack anymore (Zero lash), then I tighten another 1/4 turn and lock down. IMO you should always adjust with the car warmed up and running. If you do it with the engine off, the lifter may not be pumped up with oil, unless you let them soak in oil before theinstall, then adjust once with the engine off. Once you bleed off the oil, I believe your settings wont be soo good. I think you'll end up adjusting too tight due to the adjusting without oil. Once the oil pumps up the lifter...it will be too tight. JMO.

To add to that, when doing zero lash, you want to always do it while the car is running & up to temperature because if you adjust to zero lash while its cold it might be way too loose when it warms up, I notice anything past zero 1/16th of a turn while warm & you can't rev anymore with Comp R' lifters. but do it while warm & running to zero lash & it'll be quite in the morning & when warm. This isn't only because of lifter pump up, its mostly because when the engine warms up the heads move away fromt he block causing the rocker settings to be too loose or loosen.

Matt.

Thanks for the info guys..

So how messy of a job is it to adjust the rockers while idling?
Also, I will need to remove the alternator to remove the valve covers, I'm assuming I can put it back on afterwards in order to run the car while adjusting??

I just ran the car in the garage again after work tonight I'm hearing an audible knock on both sides of the engine.. I thought the rockers if loose would sound more like a "slapping" noise.

The knock should go away if you adjust while running. I take the alt off and run with it off (as well as the belt off obviously). The time it takes to adjust is about 10 minutes total for me. The key is to have all the poly locks unlocked and the tool for it easily accessible (reachable in the engine compartment). Then rocker by rocker, adjust the rocker loose to get the clacking and tighten with fingers till it goes away. Turn with wrench another 1/4 turn and lock! Move onto to the next one! Do each side like this. It doesnt make that much of a mess idling. If you were to rev it, it will splatter dropplets of oil on your headers and fender walls.
