I started to mod my car last year when i was 18.. Now i leave for school in june and there are some sever doubts that it will be finished in time.. I set a budget of 2k for parts and a friend of mine and my did all the labor.. Well i am one of the casses where everything that could go wrong went wrong.. I am know at about 5-6k in parts and the engine is on a stand with some sever carnnage due to a broken exausht valve bouncing around in the cylinder. I wish i would have just left the car the way it was.. It was a one owner 93 6-speed with 68k miles on it, absolutly gorgeous.. now is a dust coverd 93 no egnine no trans. Just be ready to invest a lot more than you think you going to.. there is always a chance something will break. Good luck on whichever route you travelle.

same exact thing happened to me
8 months later i got it
1 week later my oil pickup fell off
2 weeks after i fixed that i got caught in snowstorm while diving cross country
now my car looks like this
Interesting thread.
Wow...If I had it to do all over again I would have just kept my first car('98 Chrysler Sebring) and have been done with it. Instead, I'm on my 3rd brand-new Camaro and out nearly $30,000 from all the down payments, monthly payments, insurance, modifications, labor, etc...I could have long moved out, finished college, or even bought a brand-new '02 F-body outright without oweing a dime if I had just done things differently and not blown so much of my own $$$ on these cars.
BTW, I just turned 23.
Anyways, I'd say hold on to most of that money as it could probably be better spent elsewhere but if putting it all into your Z makes you happy, go for it! Just be prepared for more cost's though.

But how would the insurance payments have been on the new Vette compared to what you went with instead?
If you want to consider what was spend on all the sports cars..
1979 corvette $4500
1969 camaro $3500+ $3000 for paint and parts
1987 formula 350 $700+ $1000 paint and parts
1987 iroc 350 $700
1991 camaro rs $2400+ $3000 parts
2 1993 camaro z28's $4000 for one $5000+ $6000 parts
1995 egale talon tsi awd $8500+ $1000 trans work
Then the beaters to drive
1988 corsica $700
1987 mustang $400
1985 f150 $450
1991 blazer $2100
Take all that and i could have had a very very nice car

95z28 + 03 silverado ex cab 4x4

niether one is pretty
the Z06 would def be a more reliable and tame sports car, but impractical for me. I move every 12 weeks

gas milage would beatem all though

so would the coolness factor-
but then your cursed with car hoes for the rest of your days
luckily the camaro is blessed with this curse
and the truck is not
so i get my pick depending on my mood/availability
I have no regrets about the $$$ I've spent on my car. But I am at a way different point in my life than the guy who started the thread, that's all I was trying to say.
As far as saying what other car you could buy with the money you spent on your F-body it you had just driven a beater for the years you've owned your F-body and saved up, that's not the only way to look at it. You have had the pleasure of owning and driving your F-body for all that time. And what's more, the time you have spent working on it, talking about it, bench racing, selecting parts, etc. was (at least in my case) a big (positive) part of your life over that time. You have had membership into a very diverse and entertaining community (this board), and you have learned a lot about cars and maybe even about other people and yourself. And as I have, you may have made many friends in the "real world".
That's a lot more "value" than owning a stock Z06, or Viper, or whatever. And of course, if you spent your money even 1/2 wisely, your car can crush any of these fine machines anyway*. So don't regret it, enjoy it

*if it was put together and running and not strewn over the garage floor, LOL
