just order a complete motor and their suggested setup for your goals. 425hp is VERY easy with just a heads and cam package, but if you want a full rebuild, 500is a fairly easy number for pros to hit.
I probobly am not the best one to talk to about this since i have blown nearly $50,000 on cars and i'm only a college freshman (383 95Z28, 03 silverado), but I have the financial means to pay for them myself.
Anyway, I would HIGHLY suggest moving out and going away. it is a great growing opportunity that living at home simply can not provide. My mom called me yesterday telling me she was mailing me near $1000 for this semester (books and living expences she gives me)
I kindly turned it down saying I needed to make it on my own. Its bad enough shes paying insurance on my car and co-signing my tuition/car loans. I have no real problem paying them, but still...
The there is more to college than F=MA. the full college expierence includes learning about life, learning to make it on your own, living with people, social skills, being that "poor college kid" (which i am not expierencing too much of).
I moved from the capital of the world (20miles from NYC) on a beautiful island, 2 miles from the beach, nice house great friends to flint michigan- one of the dirtiest, ghetto, dangerious cities in the country. Its like the middle of no where compared to my house. This whole system has been culture shock to me. People are COMPLETELY different here.
I have learned more from just living on my own than i could ever learn being at home and having mommy an daddy take care of me. Living at home will get you a degree, but you will have NO IDEA what you are realy missing.
on the technical aspect of things-
$5000 will get you fast for a while.
then your trans will go
the your rear
then a driveshaft
then a few parts will fail
your fuel pump will go
then you will need safety equipment
then you will fail emissions
then add in labor
just make sure you know what your getting yourself into
dont forge the little things like ignition, gaskets ect.
your project will probobly cost double what you plan and tripple in time.
$5000 is less than 1/2 what a solid car will take like Freds.
good luck, stay safe

edit:
if you need more help, I can help guide you in the right direction having been in you shoes about 8 months ago.

I was beginning to feel too old for this thread until I read Ted and Rich's comments.
It's called "delayed gratification". I drove an old POJ Falcon 4 door when I went off to school. I knew I'd have what I wanted once I got out though.
Like they said, put the money in some account that draws some interest. May want to open a savings account with the bank and put a little in that account. Not for investment purposes mind you.... take $500 open a savings account.... then borrow $500 from the bank and pay that back in advanced payments. Establishing good credit with a bank is the right step towards financial responsibility. My dad put me on this same route.... helped me out alot later on in life when I had "no credit" (just as bad as "bad credit")..... I was good with the bank though, and that's all that counts.
I agree with Rich on the supercharger thing. Gotta look beyond the cost of the kit... there is a bit more to it than that, especially when you start playing around with things.

only now your in a boat with two other old farts
Damn, can the dude live? It's pretty clear that his parents are going to take care of his school and stuff. I'm sure he doesn't need a life lesson from us ( as if he would listen anyways, would you at 18? )
Hey dude,
Ported heads and intake
XE or CC306 camshaft
LONGTUBE headers not shorties
A good cat back system
CSI or Mezeire waterpump
PCMFORLESS tuning
58mm TB
Of course new wires plugs and all that stuff
Cold air intake (moroso it's pretty cheap)
Torque converter if auto or a good clutch if M6
3.73 gears with a good posi unit ( I would try and get dad to spring for a 12 bolt)
I'm sure there are some things that I am leaving out but this should give you an idea. Everyone is right about saving the money but if your parents are willing to spend the money on your car, GO FOR IT! There is nothing like having fun in a fast car. But I will have to tell you that it's not worth all the tickets. I used to street race and now we all do it on the TRACK only. Have fun dude. You should try to buy as much of the stuff used here on the board. You will get more for your money. Shop wise though and check prices. That's just my .25 (inflation ya know)

i'd just like to say good luck with dental school when you get there, it's a very demanding and stressfull environment, but I'm sure you'll get through it with hard work.
I'm 21 and in my first year of dentistry myself. And I'm just about to buy my first car (black 1996 camaro Z28 - A big thank you to Black bow tie!).
Well, gotta go study microbiology for my exam tomorrow (looks like it's gonna be another all-nighter).

You've got 5,000 to blow.. MOVE OUT. It's as simple as that. I'm no old fart either, I'm 20.. I go to school and I have a reasonable fast car. Take this advice from a peer who's been there.
Jeez man, you're not even twenty and you want some fast **** 400+ hp car.. what next a ferrari?
Kids as young as us are flat out lucky to be able to own a Z28. Just be happy with what you've got, for now. You said you already had two SS's.. did you wreck them both or do you just get a new car every year? I really think you of all people should move out and be on your own.. sounds like you've live a sheltered, spoiled life.. I know you're going to take that the wrong way but.. well.. it's the truth. For once you ought to try paying for things on your own, cleaning your own living facilities, and cooking for yourself. Now is the time to do this.. everyone else does.. join the club... it's called growing up. Now is the time when you move out and learn about what life is really like. Now is the time when you learn how to wipe your own **** since mommy and daddy won't always be around to do it for you. I suggest you invest this money in some independance.
There are about a million things you could do with that much money that would be better than blowing it on a car at your age... heck you already have a nice car.. how much nicer does it need to be? The decisions you make now are what determine how the rest of your life will be.. you're setting a trajectory here for the rest of your life.. $5,000 would go a long way to making that trajectory a good one in a lot of different ways... a really fast car on the other hand will just pick up a few chicks at best and at worst it may very well get you killed in a servere auto accident
Doesn't anyone see a parallel here with the 16 yr old kid who wrecked his brand new 03 Cobra? The post is in the lounge here
I know this seems like a slap in the face and.. well.. it is. It's called a reality check - we all need them from time to time
Please try not to take this post the wrong way.. it's not meant to be a personal attack. Have a nice day

That is kinda high. I'll do a cam intstall and port the heads on the side for $2000 including labour, parts, fluids and gaskets? Where are you taking it to? The most labour i have seen is around a $1000 for a head and cam install.
You know what, im convinced that I should not make my car go faster. And yes, I have crashed the other 2 ss's that you were asking about. Im just gunna be smart and chill in my car the way it is, it is already very fast. But I will do the engine rebuild though. I will not get nitrous. But I will put a cam in there becuase I might as well if im gunna pull the engine out and rebuild it. Not gunna do the heads or NOS, thats WAY too dangerous. Im mature enough to know what I can and cannot handle and after a ride in my 25 year old friends TA with nos, Im am sure I will not be able to handle that. Anyways, I will get a torque convertor and a transgo kit and that cam with the rebuild. Thats it. Also some suspension stuff like trailer arms and sub frame connectors. I can already fish tail and break traction on accident with my car and I feel that my need for more speed should just shut the **** up. Im going to focus on other stuff, like maybe some subs and a full sound system, a navigation unit. Ground effects and things that will make my car stand out. What do you guys think.

2 fender benders
zero moving violations
without the car i wouldn't be an ME student or be in automotive engineering. I never take the camaro to parties (other than a good friends kinda deal). dont want those girls who are after a nice car
.to stereotype all 18 years is kinda ignorant IMHO.
and to say motorsports wont get you anything but a few chicks is even worse
I started to mod my car last year when i was 18.. Now i leave for school in june and there are some sever doubts that it will be finished in time.. I set a budget of 2k for parts and a friend of mine and my did all the labor.. Well i am one of the casses where everything that could go wrong went wrong.. I am know at about 5-6k in parts and the engine is on a stand with some sever carnnage due to a broken exausht valve bouncing around in the cylinder. I wish i would have just left the car the way it was.. It was a one owner 93 6-speed with 68k miles on it, absolutly gorgeous.. now is a dust coverd 93 no egnine no trans. Just be ready to invest a lot more than you think you going to.. there is always a chance something will break. Good luck on whichever route you travelle.
