My turn for new opti. odd ?s inside
My turn for new opti. odd ?s inside
Ok I am in the middle of the opti replacement, I have everything off and fished the aluminum splinter out of my finger so I can type.
The opti was toast the bearing is gone, it still spins freely but is very loose and the inside of the rotor was clean but the studs the rotor sends spark too were halfway eaten through,
Is the splined stud that drives the opti supposed to be loose? I did not pull it out but do I need to replace it? and is it splined a special way to go in as well?
The water pump drive on the timing cover side is supposed to have an O ring right? Mine has been leaking oil cause oil is thrown up on the inside of the water pump. I think the Oring on the spline is really worn its flat but I want to make sure the 94s have an Oring there.
I am going to put on a new ICM and a coil with this whole thing to eliminate any spark problems.
The same deal applies to the 94 optis that the opti needs to sit flush and not be drawn onto the timing cover with the bolts?
Sorry for so many questions, I have done alot of stuff on this car but this is the first opti I have done.

The splined shaft definitely needs to be inserted in the correct position, and has a unique "tooth" on it that in theory allows it only to be inserted the correct way. Unfortunatley, I have seen post after post where people insist they fit it back together correctly, only to find they had to tear it down again and reposition the splined shaft. In NO CASE should you "draw" the Opti down with the mounting bolts.
If you don't get the splines in the correct position, your timing will be totally screwed up.

So is it Ok to start the car up with the water pump off just to see if it will start before putting it all back together?
Also, I used some Indian Head gasket shellac on my diff cover and it worked excellent, can I use the stuff on the water pump gaskets?
Or should I just use RTV?

Re: My turn for new opti. odd ?s inside
I know it's an old post but it turned up in a search..
Yes the 94 water pump drive has 2 o rings one on each end..
Yes you can start the car for a few secs to see if it runs w/o the water pump on..
Yes Indian Head is OK, but these days I use RTV[the orange stuff]
