Why? Show me tangible proof that it sucks. Because I've seen pretty good oil analysis results with people using this oil. And it's got one of the better base oils of all the dino oils out there.

If I was running a dino oil, Pennzoil would be one of my top choices.

 

Let me clue you in:

Engine:
Mobile One

Tranny:
Mobile One Synthetic ATF

Rear End:
Mobile One Synthetic Gear Lube 75w-90

Misc Lubricating(like bolts and whatnot):
Mobile One Synthetic Universal Grease

As you can tell I don't believe in Mobile One. I have just heard to many great stories about the product to trust it

 

when I don't use Castrol GTX, I use a fine mix of crisco and cannola...

 

Mobil 1, 15w50 , same stuff thats won Indy many many years.
15w50 has always provided great oil pressure year round, and starts up great even in the cold.

 

I agree with LT1coz. Royal Purple isn't the cheapest, but I had Mobil 1 in the engine, tranny and diff that I swapped to RP and I have to shift quicker now. I haven't been to the track to see if it made a difference there, but it definitely revs quicker now. I have heard Mobil keeps cheapening up the formula of Mobil 1 every time they "redesign" it. There was an independent study done a while back that tested all the synthetic formulas and believe it or not Mobil 1 was among the worst performers. I'll see if I can find the link to the site of it's still there.

 

You don't honestly believe they use off the shelf $4 Mobil 1 in a $100,000 Indy car engine do you? I heard it happened once or twice, but generally speaking they use custom blends for their oils in those engines.

 

I use either Mobil 1 5w-30 or Royal Purple 5w-30.

I have RP 75w-90 in the rear end and am about to put RP in the tranny.

 

Castrol Syntec 5-50w. Its synthetic and the VESCOSITY RANGE says it all really. The 5w provides the flow (especially cold) specified by GM, and the 50w provides the heat/stress shear protection beyond what GM specifies. Synthetics don't use additives to widen the vescosity range like dino oils do.
WIDER IS BETTER.

 

Please find that article!! This is something i think about all the time what really has been proven to be the "best" oil. Im gunna assume its etheir RP od Ams oil. Im not a big fan of Ams oil, not cuz of the price or anything, im sure it does have an advantage over any, "over the counter" oils but i've heard alot bout it leading to premature oil leaks An doing an oil pan an timing cover gaskets in the LT1s atleast isn't really like a project u wana get into unless u have to.

That is one of the worst oils you can use. First of all, it is a dino oil, as Castrol Syntec is not a real synthetic (except for their 0w30 which is labelled made in Germany) Second of all, in order to span such a huge viscosity range, that oil contains TONS of viscosity index improvers. Third, a 50wt oil is too thick for the LT1, and you're going to see higher engine wear as a result. Oil analysis results prove that the LT1 does not need such a thick oil.
