Mobil 1 is definitely a true synthetic, their base oil uses a PAO/ester mix. I still believe it's not the best choice though, smaller synthetic companies like Redline and Amsoil don't need to make the same compromises like Exxon/Mobil does, and the smaller companies are quicker to improve their products too. As a result, Mobil 1 is good, but nowhere near "great" They could be so much better, with the knowledge they have, but to keep their costs lower so they can sell their oil for $4, they make too many sacrifices.

Pennzoil and Quaker State are now merged as one company, this is true, however they are still two totally separate oils. When the two companies merged, they kept their own brands and left them unchanged from before. I know someone who works for Pennzoil, and he confirmed this for me.

Now they are both owned by Shell actually.

holy cow. Old thread.

I use autozone brand and change it every 2k miles. That's about every 6 months.

Yep, Castrol 0w30 is still a very good oil. Not too many people talk about it as much anymore, but I still see a few oil analysis results posted from it and it's still impressive.

The latest oil I'm running which has also shown impressive oil analysis results is the new Pennzoil Ultra.

Is this thread for Northerners only? WTF is 0w30, LOL? Down here in the deep south I run 20W-50 with a quart of Lucas, especially for older/high mileage cars during the summer. I actually voted for Mobil 1 Synthetic, but I can't ever find that in 20w, so I usually get Castrol or Valvoline.

There is no reason to run 20W-50 in these cars...anywhere in the world! You're losing power to the oil pump pushing that 'molasses' around the engine.
I live in Florida and my oil pressure and consumption are just fine with the oil weights recommended in the owners manual.....
