May be about to get a used LT1, need advice, info.

Im looking at drop tops..most are autos.

I have read about how the rear 10 bolt is very week and that the 6 speed manuals are week to (synchros). My last LT1 had the 2nd gear synchros go (got fixed under waranty).

I am wondering if the auto's are better at talking the power?

Im not even sure of what a 10bolt is... does the auto also have the 10 bolt?

Even though I have owned an lt1 before, I would still like some tips on what to look for before buying it. As mentinoed, it will probably be a drop top.

On a side note.. how much would I be looking to spend to get LT,catback, intake, and a cam (without install price)?

A 10 bolt is the rear end, all 4th gen cars have a 10 bolt. It can't handle a decent amount of power...when you put sticky tires on is when you have real problems or you are launching at high rpms. A 6 speed transmission is virtually bullet proof, it will handle more power then an auto any day of the week.

How much does a 12bolt go for?

I wouldnt say the M6 is bullet proof since I know for a fact the synchros are week... to me that is a pretty big weekness. Wouldnt you say?

The automatics have a weak PWM valve, which tends to leak and screw up the transmission. I've had mine rebuilt 4 times, three times under warranty and once fully race built. The manual would be a lot stronger.

So the easyest transmission to maintain/fix would be the M6?

Manuals...just usually need to change the clutch every so often...
Dont know about autos.

So in summery, best to find a manual?

Thanks for all.

Its my understanding that the m6 is very durable. I wouldn't say its the easiest to fix, but it should last much longer than the auto. If your clutch goes out just upgrade it to a better one that can handle the power.

10 bolt rear is shaky with anything over 400 hp. (Slicks and manual trans will definately break it eventually). Look for about $2K to upgrade rearend. M6 is definately stronger than A4 but that does not necessarily mean it is quicker. A well built A4 and high stall converter and trans cooler will beat an M6, 98% of the time. look for about $ 2500.00 to beef up a 4L60E and put a stall converter on it. Other than that opti's are crap might want to consider Delteq.($500 to $700?). Stock pistons will not handle supercharger or spray very long, so consider cam, heads, longtubes if you want to keep stock shortblock. I am not trying to discourage you because these cars can be bad *** fast for a pretty reasonable price, and you will definately learn how to work on car if you buy one. They are a sh*t load of fun when you really start getting into it. Good luck!
