new camshaft and lifts

Hey guys, I have a 1997 Camaro 5.7/350, I want to put a new camshaft, lifts, and roller rocker arms in it. I need advice on what cam I should run in it. I don't want it to run too rough but to sputter a little. So any advice out there as to what brand/size cam I should run. Thanks!

Re: new camshaft and lifts

need more info on what other mods have been done to the motor...

if still stock heads, stall, gears you will need to stay on the smaller side for cam

check out Lloyd Elliott (LE Portworks) or Advanced Induction for a custom grind suited for your existing mods

There are a few off the shelf cams but for the $100 cost difference if that a custom grind from one of those two will provide more power

you will need a new PCM tune for any cam you get

The 304 is pretty small. It'll drive pretty much exactly as it does now. Wouldn't expect much sound out of it.

Most guys run the slightly hotter 305 cam in daily drivers.

Selecting a cam based on wanting it to "sputter a little" is not the best way to proceed. The "sputter" comes from high valve overlap. High valve overlap typically produces poor low RPM torque, for the benefit of more very high RPM HP. Doesn't make any sense.

A little sputter is fine. It's when you pick your cam by going to the bottom of the cam page in the catalog that you start getting into trouble.

Or you can cheat.

"Little" 235/247 duration in my DD at 65% throttle (17 year old throttle cable had stretched).

Re: new camshaft and lifts

you will have to send your PCM to a mail order tuner or find a tuner/dyno to do it

with your cam and basic mods a mail order would be fine.

fastchip.com (Ed Wright) is who I use
