LT1 Crankshaft sensor. Reality is????

Conflicting information all over the web.

1996 LT1.

Some say the sensor does not really matter and the car will run with or without it. it only is there to allow the PCM know of a missfire. Nothing more.

Others say it is 100 percent crucial and the car will not run one at all without it.

So the reality of it is???

Thanks

Think about it this way..... the crank sensor is only used on 96/97 LT1's. Yet all the LT1's.... 93-97 run. Numerous people have deleted the CKP sensor from the OBD-II cars, and they run just fine. The PCM only needs the cam position data from the optical cam position sensor in the Optispark distributor. It uses that data to set ignition and injector timing. Does not need CKP data.

And I see the problem.... two responses = one yes and one no.

Fred is spot-on. Deleting the CKP (or modifying the circuit in any way) will NOT cause a no-start condition, so chevy_dude97 is incorrect.

The CKP is there to detect misfires. It's not necessary, but can come in handy to identify a missfiring cylinder.

However, you provided the correct response.

Cam and crank position are determined by the opti. Both are internal to it's optical pickup. There is no explicitly named sensor that is used. No low resolution pulse from the opti means the engine will not run.

An LT1 is not like other engines that use a crank sensor in the traditional sense.
