LT1 Catalytic Converter removal

Hello all, new guy here.
Im wondering the consequences of removing the cats off of my 96 Camaro SS. They're bad, and I would really like to spend that kind of money on something else for the car.

thanks for any help.

also, any recommendations on a clutch?[SIZE=2]

Emissions testing is a problem without cats among various other things. I would turn to SPEC for a clutch they build some very good peices. I use their stage 2 and I love it. Never heard anything bad about them.

the '96 has o2 sensors post-cats. i.e. you can't just remove the cats w/o computer problems. You'd have to run 02 Sims if you just gut them (~$85).
If you don't race, just go w/ the SLP clutch and pressure plate. its an LT4 PP but uses Lt1 stock disc. Good unit for normal or agressive driving. I have a spec stage4 in my track car. that is one agressive clutch, I would not want that for the street.

I have a 96 Camaro and I took off the cats, then replace it with some tubing, it doesn't affect the sound but makes it sound a little better. You won't need sims if you just take it and get the cats tuned out of your ECM and the O2 sensors. I have had all this done, you will have to get someone to pass you though because it will pass the computer test but won't pass the visual. I'd recommend removing them myself. I removed them when I got my headers installed.

Your car is going to sound a little raspier without the cat. I had a single cat car with a gutted cat and it doesn't sound as good as the one with the cat. But that was gutted, not swapped for an off road Y pipe. Should sound better with an off road Y. Oh, these cars both run Hooker cat backs.

I don't have emissions tests to worry about. I can pretty much do whatever.

I believe obd1 doesn't really care if you have a cat or not. I have a gutted cat on my car and my buddy had just a straight pipe in place of the cat no computer codes thrown on either car. obdII doesn't like them b/c of the after cat o2. You'll be fine replacing the cat with a pipe on a 94.

What you can do, which is what i suggest to do if your area has local emissions stops is gut the cat and place a pipe in it so it looks like theres a cat there however its a straight pipe. I gutted my car and never placed a pipe in it, and its causing me some problems I believe because turbulance in there builds up. It sounds bad from inside the car hearing the whirling sound from the car, however made the car a bit louder. I like the way mine sounds. When i do my headers ill be placing a pipe inside the cat.

This is what you need to do regardless if you have emissions or not.

Re: LT1 Catalytic Converter removal

So I am looking to do this on my swap as well. I have the drivetrain out of a 94 LT1 TA, and do not want the cats as I have no room under the 83 RX7 that is recieving the new engine. I would also like to delete the EGR system as I see no need for it. I am emissions exempt with this car so no worries there. And I cannot help but believe that the setup will still be cleaner than the filthy little rotary with carb setup that is being replaced. I know for a fact that it will greatly improve fuel economy. Any thoughts or tips for me? I am also planning a cam and a valvetrain freshining.

Re: LT1 Catalytic Converter removal

For starters, the 94 only had a single cat, at the end of the Y-pipe. Unlike the 96 discussed above, the 94 is OBD-I and does not have an after-cat O2 sensor to check for the presence/efficiency of the cat. So you can remove the cat with no consequences whatsoever.
