Re: LT1 Catalytic Converter removal

Mine didnt sound that great with the shorty headers, but with the long tubes the raspynes is gone and it sounds so much cleaner at high rpm.

Hmm I took the cat off my LT1. She sounds awesome. It's not all too raspy. Just makes the LT1 clear it's vocal cords.

Thats the reason why I decided to put at least a high flow on my car. It was pretty scary driving around without a cat due to the possible consequences. Not really worth it to me.

I think the normal fine is like $3000 or something.

But who the hell is going to crawl under one of our cars to look?

And for the record flowmaster catbacks sound pretty good, (mind did anyway) but they are pretty craptastic in the flow category.

My daily driver Moostang has no cats, and you'd never know it.

You can only tell a little bit in the Formula (especially when she is cold and running rich), but then again the exhaust dumps at the axle.

As for catless w/ Flowmaster sounding bad.....click my link people, make your own opinion on it.

Stock manifolds without cat = lose.
Long tube headers without cat = win.

Simple math.

Re: LT1 Catalytic Converter removal

Got rid of mine couple of weeks ago when I had the longtubes installed. Sounds much meaner and louder with the stock exhaust still hooked up.

Re: LT1 Catalytic Converter removal

Ive got edelbrock TES headers, no cat + texas speed rumbler system... it sounds ungodly... my buddy tells me it sound like a nascar or some kind of illegal trailer queen drag car.... I LOVE IT.

I ran the car with the cat and I noticed an immediate improvement when I removed the cat.... Cats = *****(cat) right? Get rid of the meow mix dude.

Re: LT1 Catalytic Converter removal

It's been my personal experience that catless LT1's sound horrible with wide-open Borla or SLP Loudmouth systems...Magnaflow, Random Tech, & Corsa get pretty darn raspy without cats as well...

My favorite without cats is the Hooker Aerochamber...Of course when it comes to true duals w/ no cats, you get rid of any crappy mid-range rpm rasp from a catless Y-pipe set-up...

Removing the cat does usually cause at least a little raspiness and more popping (depending upon what cat-back you're running). But I think I'm going to ditch mine soon to wake up the Flowmaster muffler and wake the dead through the open cutout.
