lt1 block cast numbers is v1206yss is it a ss motor
i bought a 1996 lt1 motor and the cast number is v1206yss does this mean it came out of the 96 ss camaro cant find block cast site for 1996 lt1s
Re: lt1 block cast numbers is v1206yss is it a ss motor
I never saw a casting # that had letters
you should have a casting # on the block behind the head, It will most likely be 10125327, which all LT1's and LT4's I've seen are
if it is 10168588 you got screwed, since this is for the L99

2 bolt and 4 bolt blocks have no distinction between casting numbers either.
Re: lt1 block cast numbers is v1206yss is it a ss motor
this cast is on front of block i aready know its a lt1 the cast at back of block shows 5.7 aluminum heads .but the front cast that is stamped has ss at the end .it is a 96 motor also has a plug under timing chan cover that my 95 lt1 motor did not have like a oil temp plug.
Re: lt1 block cast numbers is v1206yss is it a ss motor
I think their point was more that the blocks are all the same reguardless or year or what they were put in. The crank position sensor is that plug you speak of and in in the timing cover and no bearing on the block. You should know the wonderful SS got the same entire bottomend as a lowely Roadmaster or worse yet a civilian Caprice. So who cares what it was installed in, in reality if anything I think an SS motor should be avoided as it will have lived a harder life.
Re: lt1 block cast numbers is v1206yss is it a ss motor
I actually saw the numbers he is talking about on an LT1 engine sitting on a shelf at my school. Started with a V, then some numbers. Who knows what it is. I tried looking it up with the programs at school, but came up with nothing.
Re: lt1 block cast numbers is v1206yss is it a ss motor
On the front passenger side of the block there is a milled off area with the following letters and numbers...VO425YSH stamped in. The guy I bought it from said it came out of a 1996 Impala SS It also has.iron heads. My question is: was he correct about what the engine came out of?

Re: lt1 block cast numbers is v1206yss is it a ss motor
GM engine identification codes generally follow the form:
First position is engine plant, V = Flint, MI
Second and third position is month of production, always numerical. Is it possible “C” is actually a “0”? 04 = April
Fourth and fifth positions are day of production, 25 = 25th of April
The last three positions (can be LPH a or numeric) code to the engine details like displacement, HP, year/make of vehicle, transmission, fuel system, etc.
Finding the translation of the last three characters is the challenge. And that’s where I run out of the ability to help.
Iron heads were only used on the B-Body..... Impala, Roadmaster, Fleetwood

Re: lt1 block cast numbers is v1206yss is it a ss motor
Thanks injuneer, I'll start working on the last three letters (YSH) and see if I can learn more. PS, I know what you mean about New Jersey, I left there at 18 and never regretted it. Both my brothers left at 18 also and then my parents at age 65.
Re: lt1 block cast numbers is v1206yss is it a ss motor
I've seen various 3-character codes used on the emissions label. Not sure if those are related. I have a Chilton's for the 3rd and early 4th Gen Camaro/Firebird, and it has emissions routing diagrams for those 3-character codes. I'll look in the F-Body factory service manuals too.
There is an engine partial VIN stamped on the back of the block, near the oil filter. The first number differentiates between the Chevrolet and the Pontiac for the F-Body. Not sure if other brands would have a different first number (3rd digit of VIN).
