Loud pop then fuel fire?
Loud pop then fuel fire?
So I was just backing out of my driveway to get gas after a trip to the dmv. I heard a loud pop and tons of smoke was pouring out, popped the hood and there was a small fire. Where this happened I saw pieces of black plastic shattered and what looks like half of a black plastic clamp. Before this I could smell raw gas badly. I figured it was the egr. The engine still has power so I'm wondering what could have caused that. No major damage was done just some burnt plastics. The fuel line was burnt to a crisp and disconnected. Any information you need please let me know I would like to figure this out. Still in shock haha.

Re: Loud pop then fuel fire?
After some more digging I found my egr valve is not bad, the mechanic did not plug it back in and I believe he capped off the vacuum connection. Could someone post a picture of the egr valve connections I cannot see diagrams clearly online.

Nothing to do with EGR should cause a fire or gas smell. It's all exhaust gases.

Re: Loud pop then fuel fire?
The green plug on the passenger side is likely the connector for the MAP sensor. I suspect you had a fuel accumulation in the intake manifold (leaking fuel pressure regulator??) and it exploded, and blew the black plastic MAP sensor out of the manifold.
Not sure what we would do without Shoebox's photos:

Re: Loud pop then fuel fire?
With that much energy dissipated you need to check everything attached to the intake, including parts connected by hoses. MAF, throttle blades, Opti vent line fittings, vacuum lines, etc. I've had a nitrous pop bend the throttles blades to a 90° angle. And it didn't blow the MAP sensor off.

Ps: I think it's ironic how i said I was going to set it on fire not to long ago... And sure enough. Had I been on the road it would be a crispy camaro.
