The factory Y pipe and cats suck. There's 10 HP to be had just by changing that. Unless you change the Y pipe, shorties will not give the best results.

yeah i wouldnt do that... pick up a set of single cat headers. they all come with a y-pipe. then if your set on a cat just buy a 3 inch one, or get one off someone here that removed theres.

Re: Long tubes or shorties?

Here's my dyno results with ati procharger, 12 lb pulley, about 10 lbs boost:

1. Edelbrock shorties, single cat, stock midpipe, flowmaster muffler: 480 rwhp

2. FLP longtubes, 2 cats, single 3" midpipe to 2-2 1/2" magnaflows: 525 rwhp

You have to look at the exhaust system as a whole. Now the sound is much deeper with the longtubes, I'll testify to that.

in your application yeah you are going to see a hell of a gain... but your pushing almost twice as much hp as this guy is going to be.
apples to oranges here

oh and i've gained 20 hp from a cut out over a 3 inch cat back

Re: Long tubes or shorties?

here is a side by side difference from flp long tubes, no cats and 4 inch mufflex cat back, compared to 2 2 1/2 dumps in the y pipe

What leads you to the assumtion that they suck? What makes the custom headers you have better than any on the market...and half the price...of which ones are you refering. Do you have any hard documentation that your headers are better than other ones offered to anybody? No offense but the way your saying it, sounds like your just making accusations. I think that Kook's are pretty hard to beat, and you must have gotten a hell of a deal...since the ones you had made were obviously stainless steel as well?

Maybe their shorty style headers, i saw a set of them on a 93 and i do agree that they are garbage, coated or not. Now, I know you arent refering to the new design long tubes, because that would be goddamn foolish.

AND since that has absolutely nothing to do with the thread, I'd like to say that IMO shorty style headers have absolutely no advatage performance wise vs. a long tube style design. You dont see them using shortys in NEXTEL cup or in NHRA drag racing to save a few dollars do you? the only application i would reccomend them for would be dramaticly lowered cars.

Re: Long tubes or shorties?

Alright this thread is getting dumb.

Get some longtubes, if you cant get those then get some midlengths, if you cant get those get some shorties. That is as simple as it gets.

Just cause mr. special can get custom headers for half of aunt ruth's apple pie or whatever, doesnt mean anything is junk.

All this garbage is coming from someone who put a 58mm TB on a nearly stock car. Hell he doesnt even have headers.
