Long tubes or shorties?

I Don't know much about headers, so i was wondering if i should go longtubes or short length. The car is a 97 lt1 with a CAI and a cat back exhaust. I heard you lose some low end power when you use lt's but i dont know who to believe. I just had one of cats replaced so if possible i wouldn't want to scrap them. One more question i had is how are lt's on gas mileage, just wondering becasue i use my car as a daily driver.

Kind of stupid questions but i'm clueless

any info. is greatly appreciated

thanks

Pacesetter LT's. See times in sig. Very easy installation, high quality, cheap price. Had them almost 2 years now and the coating has held up extremely well.

What are your emissions regulations like? That will have alot to do with it. Plus, if you use long tubes, you will not be able to reuse your stock y-pipe so that new cat. you had replaced will be going to the curb. If you go the shorties route, however, you will be able to use the stock y-pipe.

The emissions are not a problem, i just wanted to keep the cats. in because of the gas prices and the annoying CES light.

What do cats have to do with gas prices? And when you get headers you need a tune so u can get the SES light turned off for not havin cats.

Re: Long tubes or shorties?

What i meant was i am concerned that going with the lt's and scrapping the cats would kill the gas mileage.

If i did go with lt's, does anyone know how much the tune to turn off the ses would cost?

Hey, like i said i'm clueless

To tune the SES light off, it would cost around 35.00 to 50.00, that is what I was quoted in the past. Other option is to run 02 simulators and those cost about 35.00-40.00 a piece.

How are longtubes on low end power/torque? Should there be any gains or losses?

Re: Long tubes or shorties?

I have had alot of friends go with shorties headers as their first set of headers, then swap them out a few months later for longtubes. They allways say I wished I would have just went with long tubes right off the bat and saved my self time and money. I dont know if that has happened to everybody else but the people I know just wasnt satisfied with the shorties, not that they are bad or didnt fit, just personal preference of my friends of trying to get a few extra horses out of their header swap.
might want to make sure of what you want before you buy headers, have the exaust hooked back up and pc tuned before you go through like 3 sets of headers like my friends did.

Re: Long tubes or shorties?

Headers, especially longtubes, will let your engine get rid of exhaust more efficiently. That adds up to better mileage.

Get the long ones, and get 'em coated!

Go with LTs. You will gain power everywhere in the power curve.

Actually long tubes have shown a decrease in gas mileage by up to 33% due to excessive throttle usage. lol

I am going with LT pacesetters here pretty quick. Maybe friday I'll order some. Woooo exciting!!!! I think I am going to call Victory Racing Engines to get mine.
