What does the long thing that goes down off the intake elbow do. I just put on a electric water pump and it won't fit. Will it harm anything to cut it off?

 

I have heard of people using a Pert Plus bottle cap and capping it off (that's all that the 1LE elbow is anyway), or you can cap it yourself. I rigged a setup using the Dong and completely sealed it by cutting it down to fit inside of the elbow and then siliconing a cap onto it-voila perfect fit, perfect seal

 

I guess you could rig up some cheapo way of doing that, however air will still be passing by that opening which will create a little bit of turbulence.

I couldn't justify spending $40 on something you can rig up yourself. btw Herbal Essences fits even better.
