Jacking up the motor ?

I undid the 3 bolts on each side removing the block from the motor mount, and i think i am ready to jack up the motor. But i am replacing my oil pan, so i can't jack from there. Should i jack from the harmonic balancer? Is there a limit to how high i can jack the motor? Obviously the intake on the firewall but will i harm the engine or tranny at all if i jack it up all the way?

First off - I hope you haven't removed the bolts from BOTH
motor mounts, right? You should be doing one at a time.

I've always used a 2x8 (about 6-8" long) on top of a floor jack, just
under the side of the pan to be jacked up.

whats wrong with removing both motor mount bolts? hes replacing the pan. hes gonna have to un-do them to get the engine high enough to replace the pan

you can take a piece of wood like 8-10 inches long and jack from the bottom of the timing chain cover. puts less stress on the crankshaft. just jack it up until it doesnt go up anymore. it may also help to loosen the trans mount bolt so the engine/tranny can flex a little
