Re: Hv Oil Pump

I run the Melling HV pump. It came with the necessary springs. You will need to buy the corresponding oil pickup tube for whatever pan you have and I recomend that you buy an ARP oil pump drive shaft or equivelant. I also replaced my oil pump drive assembly with a new one. The only reason I run the HV is because I want the volume there and since I run a 7 quart oil pan there's no chance of sucking the pan dry. I wouldn't do it with a stock pan.

Re: Hv Oil Pump

You should not use an HV pump with a stock pan. You can suck the pan dry, and then it's "ruh roh".

Re: Hv Oil Pump

I didn't say it was a certainty. Usually happens with prologed high rpm use. But it does happen. I learned this the hard way. Also costs hp with no gain. It's only needed if you have a "loose" setup with big bearing clearances.

Re: Hv Oil Pump

I know what you mean Rich.
Prologed high rpm could do it.
I have not had a problem.
Knock on wood.
But it is possible.

when you say "oil pump drive assembly" do you mean new gear drive?

Re: Hv Oil Pump

Interesting. I have noticed that on a WOT run on my 40 overbore with a H/V Melling pump and stock pan the oil pressure drops about 10 lbs from 55 to 40-45 and slowly will recover. Hense sucking the oil pan dry. Correct?

Re: Hv Oil Pump

I will never run a HV pump.. If I were you, I would run the stock pump with the "White" spring.. It will give you an increase in pressure, but will not increase volume considerably.. You want a slightly high pressure pump, but not high volume..

Just my $.02
