Hub removal

Well, I did a search and looked for tips on how to pull the hub. I used a 1/4" extension and the "crow's foot" looking puller. Well, It won't come off, and in the process I broke an extension, and now I just broke one of the ears off the hub. i don't know what the problem is but I need to get this thing off, and soon. What can I do now to get this damn thing off? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Hub removal

make sure that you have a long enough extension to insert into the hole that the center bolt came out of. once you have everything taut, ready to apply good pressure, just apply a little heat from a torch. maybe even alternate tightening the puller, tapping with a hammer, and applying a little heat. i broke my tool when i first tried as well. but i did use the 'footprint' type puller.

its not a 123 operation, it comes slowly. but dont become impatient and force it. if it feels like too much force, then it probably is. it will come off.

Re: Hub removal

the worst part of a cam install, just like what above said make sure it is a long enough extension.

Re: Hub removal

Yeah, the extension was long enough. It seems there is something keeping it from moving. What can I do now that the hub ear has broken? I am going to try to heat it but I only have a small propane torch cuz i am doing it at my house in my driveway. I have pulled hubs off LT1's b4 and never had this sort of problem.

Re: Hub removal

i think your most important tool here is patience. youve done the research, just keep at it. i just used a small torch as well, heated the bottom 75 percent, applied a little force on the puller, and tapped with a hammer. applied a little more force, heated, tapped, etc.

just realizing that there are 2 ears only. i havent heard yet of how to fix this issue. use your brain, youll probably figure something out, nothing comes to mind right now. gl

Re: Hub removal

You might try a search. There was someone not too long ago that broke an ear off and had a creative solution to removing it. There were pics in the thread.

Re: Hub removal

yeah, I think I saw the one where he took a cut off wheel to it. I really hope it doesn't get that far. Tomorrow is a new day, i suppose I will try to get creative and get that thing off somehow.

Re: Hub removal

Since you broke off one of the ears, try making a u shaped backing plate out of plate steel to put behind the hub when you use your puller. Drill the 3 holes in the plate and cut or torch out a u shaped notch alittle bigger than the hub shaft diameter. Slide the plate over the hub shaft behind the hub ears and hook up your puller. Snug up the plate to the 2 good ears with nuts on the front and back on the puller bolts. Hopefully this will give you 3 connections for your puller instead of 2.

(rube goldberg would be proud of this method)

Hmm thats odd. Thats how I removed the hub when I did the cam swap on the car. It sounds like your extenion didn't slide inside and push off the crank, it sounds like you were trying to push off of what you were pulling on which caused the ear to break. Good luck with getting it off, you will just have to be creative.

Re: Hub removal

Well, I got the damn thing off. I believe the reason that it didn't want to come off is that it was bent. I heated the **** out of it, and couldn't get the claw puller to stay in place..it kept twisting. I layed under the car heating the hub for damn near 30 minutes when all of the sudden I had a brilliant idea. I jumped to my feet...and put the balancer back on. With that on the puller stayed in place...withing 30 minutes I had another 1/4" extension was broken but the hub was off. I tell ya what, I need a break tho...what a pain in the *** it was. Well, I hope this idea helps anybody in the future that has the same problem I did...now I am off to sears to get the 1/4" extensions replaced. Thanks to everyone for there help.

Re: Hub removal

LT1 hubs can be a pain to remove!!

Instead of the flimsy 1/4" extension that you are inserting into the crank, I just use a grade 8 bolt about 5" long that has the same thread as the
original balancer bolt. Screw this 5" bolt all the way in and then
use your hub puller against the head of this grade 8 bolt....you
should have over 3" of travel and the hub will come off before
you bottom out.
