How many people have ripped there oil pan gasket?
Re: How many people have ripped there oil pan gasket?
From posts I have read, some have RTV'd with sucess, some haven't. The right way is to replace the gasket, so you don't have to worry about it any more.

I did the same thing replacing my timing chain. I used a lot of rtv w/ no success so I ended up droping the pan and replaceing the gasket. Even if you replace the gasket I recomend puting rtv on the front and rear.

You can seriously have the new gasket in in less than an hour. All you do is take out all the bolts, lower it as much as u can, take the old one out and clean it real good, then put RTV in each corner after you slide the gasket over the outside of the pan. It was alot easier than I thought it would be.

What all did u have to take out to change your gasket?

I actually cut the gasket anymore when doing these purposefully. They are too much of a hassel to try and get them out otherwise.
To get it to seal back up, you first RTV the timing cover and the little "U" that you ripped. Let the U set up on the timing cover overnight, dont be shy with the rtv. Next day RTV the the timing cover (with U piece attached) to the oil pan and install. Go back over the corners with some more RTV. I have done several this way and have yet to have one leak.

sorry to hijack thread but i have a question for shoebox, i installed a cloyes double roller and didn't put back the cps wheel thing back in. will it fit can i modify the cover? can i take the piece to a lathe and make it thinner i have ses light on with codes p0335/6. I did a search and didn't find a resolution other than deleting.
Re: How many people have ripped there oil pan gasket?
I just did my cam last week and paaaaaaaatience paid off. I got the cover off and back on again without ripping the seal. I used rtv black between the timing cover and oil pan just in case as well. It's dry as a bone down there.

I started to rip mine and ended up cutting it at the corners to control the area I had to "patch" later. I bought the gasket maker that everyone's talking about here and I'm just going to use that. I had to use it to make an entire gasket on a rear-end once and it didn't leak at all, so I'm pretty sure I can seal it up pretty good.
We'll see!?
