How many people have ripped there oil pan gasket?

Just want to know how many of you did what I did. I was doing my timing chain and ripped the damn gasket. I dont know how in the hell your supposed to get that out without ripping it, I mean I know how but it was just to hard. So what did yall do after you ripped it, just replace it or put rtv sealent in its place or what? And if you dident replace the gasket and put rtv stuff in did it last? Thanks.

I ripped it just put some grey gasket maker and no leaks. be sure to replace the balancer seal, it will leak. it comes in the waterpump gasket set from napa. next time just lower the oil pan.

I tore mine and ended up putting a new gasket on. My buddy ripped his and used rtv, it still leaked. I would suggest putting a new one in.

I ripped mine. The way not to do it is loosen the front oil pan bolts and let it hang down for clearance while you slide the timing cover forward and out. You should probably replace the gasket now (along with the front timing cover seals).

Replacing the gasket takes an hour taking your time so I would just do that. I ripped mine when I did my first cam and it leaked like a mother afterwords even using RTV.

Bottom line, either the gasket is going to leak or the seals on the front of the cover..... replace them all.

What all do I have to take out to get the oil pan to drop a few inches? I have a 95 z28 6spd. I've got all but I think 3 or 4 bolts out and it looks like I will have to take out the oil pump and the starter to get to the other bolts.

Removing the starter would give you easier access to the oil pan bolts back there. I'd just take all the bolts off of the oil pan, loosen the back two and let the front of the oil pan drop a little. If that's not enough you may have to jack the motor up a little for clearance.

What's harder? Lowering the pan a little and not ripping the gasket or having to repair or replace the gasket after you don't lower the pan and rip it? The 30 minutes or so it takes to lower the front of pan seems well worth it to me.

Oh I know it is well worth it to lowere the front a bit and I did do that but I dident know that the gasket was so tightly in the in the timing cover. So now it's should I rplace it or not. I want to know is there anyone else who ripped theirs and used rtv and it dident leak?

i did exactly what u did when i replaced my gears/chain i ripped the drivers side front of the oil pan gasket.no way was i changing out the gasket so i just put it back together as best as i could and used this grey gm gasket adhesive stuff.i also replaced all the seals on the timing cover but the corner of that gasket still leaks it will just have to wait until i pull the motor this winter, not a big deal, theres nothin you can do when the old gasket rips like paper

its not that hes debating on dropping the pan to get the timing cover off hes debating to replace the oil pan gasket or not...its too late for that.i backed out the front bolts of my pan and i still managed to break the corner of the gasket.honestly if you do it right rtv will work, you just have to get the surface clean and apply it right and alot of it.
