How high can an LT1 spin safely>>
How high can an LT1 spin safely>>
I'm getting ready to swap cams again. I'm going to a comp 230/236. I know I'll have to spinn the motor higher, but how high can I turn her safely? Last year, I pulled the motor, replaced oil pump, replaced head gaskets, timing chain, opti, water pump. The cylinder walls looked great (117,000 miles and still had cross hatch marks) Also replaced the cam bearings. I think the motor is pretty sound, what do you guys think?? Can I turn 6500 and be okay?
Re: How high can an LT1 spin safely>>
I think 6500 is a safe limit. I have the 230/236 and 6500 is where I have my limiter set at, and my bottom end is stock and untouched. You should be ok as long as you don't rev it there all day long.

I have the 230/236 as well and shift at 6300 (well, should as soon as I fix my 5800rpm miss -bad opti or coil?) Before my miss started I was reving it to 6300, unfortunatly I haven't gotten a good dyno pull to see exactly where this cam peaks out, but from what I've read it's around 6200-6300.

Oh and about getting a lower 1st gear, I think I'll hold off and see how this cam effects my 60's. If it doesn't get any better, this winter Craighead will take care of it.
