High volume oil pump

High volume oil pump
I got a high volume oil pump from Summit with the rebuild kit, but my stock pickup wouldn't fit, so Icalled Summit and asked if it was a special pickup or something. But the guy told me to send it back and get a stock pump becuse only going to the track once in a while it would do more harm than good becuse at high rpm's it would suck the oil pan dry. Does this make sense, has any one else heard of this?

I have not heard that one but I agree none the less that SBC's have a good oil pump and you should not use a high volume unless you are running real high RPM's.
The high volume puts all the oil at the top half of the engine and thus heats it up too much. I guess then if you think about it he could be right. But I just avoided it altogether. BTW weld your pickup on. Be sure to remove the pressure relief before you do so the heat of welding doesn't destroy it. Use the type of pickup that has the bracket that bolts to the pump so you have 2 points of strength.
