High idle
High idle
I've searched the threads and can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for. I have a 94 Z A4 that I just replaced the motor in. My problem is a high idle at start up. It shows idle at about 1000 rpm in park. In gear it shows around 750 rpm. I'm wondering if it may be my throttle body needing cleaning or is there some way to set the idle? Any help would be appreciated guys.
Re: High idle
my car, though an M6, does the same thing. on start up, it idles at roughly 900 (supposed to sit at 700). It also stays about 1000rpm untill i come to a complete stop (clutch in, completely stopped) then it drops to 700. both of these only happen when its still cold.. it usually disappears once the car is warmed up. is your's constant, temperature independant?
idle is set at 700 with new tune for computer

Re: High idle
The PCM controls the idle using the IAC motor in the base of the throttle body. Its normal for the engine to idle higher when the coolant is not warm.... there's a table in the PCM of idle speed vs coolant temp. You can look at the standard program table vaulues in my inline scanner writeup (scroll down to the "RPM" section):

Fully warmed up, the A4 should idle at 650rpm in neutral and 550rpm in drive. Keep in mind that the stock tach typically reads 100-200rpm higher than actual engine RPM. Best thing to do is put a scanner on it and read the actual RPM directly from the PCM.
For the M6 cars, stock idle setting is 800rpm, fully warmed up.
