The added tube sticking out the side is for air to be injected in between the bricks. Newer cats are more efficient and do not require the added oxygen to be injected. Seems to me someone has a surplus of old cats hanging around and is selling them on e-bay as universal cats. Remember, you get what you pay for ... platinum is not cheap, so for $35, they definitely had to save $$ somewhere in the design..

Our cars do not use a smog pump that injects oxygen into the cat ... the smog pump in our cars pumps air into the manifolds until the motor gets hot enough to allow the bricks in the cats to start performing the catalyst process; then the A.I.R. pump shuts off.

Just for refrence, the cat that I recommended, the 94109, does not have the smog hookup. It does not need it. I think they have the smog pipe welded on other models so that on an older car, you can still hook it up if you want to.

My universal Carsound 3" in/out has no pipe, and flows good, and the quality was excellent. I don't know if there is any less platinum in the Carsound cats, but they serve my purpose for putting one in. (Less Rasp, less noise, less popping, and less exhaust smell) We don't have emmisions testing in my area.
