Heads and cam

Seriously considering doing heads and cam from Loyd Elliot along with long tubes in the future. What other things should I consider to go along with the new set up?

Re: Heads and cam

You will need a PCM tune. Depending on how big the cam is (read anything more than a "mild" cam) larger injectors, 30 lb, Headers.

The torque converter is directly related to engine power so a higher stall TC and then lower rear gears to take advantage of the increased power the motor makes

Basically its a domino effect when you start performance molding. To get the best out of the motor...you need to improve the components downstream of it to get the potential the engine can produce

Re: Heads and cam

In addition to above, consider a 52mm or 58mm throttle body depending on HP. Over 425 HP at the flywheel, multiply HP times 0.07 to get minimum injector size - no real problem with oversized injectors within reason - consider a 255 LPH fuel pump. Once you go over ~450 HP, the 10-bolt rear axle may need to be replaced if you run sticky tires on a prepped track. An adjustable torque arm and LCA relocation brackets may be useful.

Re: Heads and cam

I already have 3.73 gears and a 2800 stall converter. I guess posting on a mobile device doesn’t let my signature show up. So I should upgrade the fuel pump and injectors. What about valve train upgrades? What size injectors? I definitely plan on porting the intake and going 58 mm throttle body.

Re: Heads and cam

Your signature is visible, and I saw it. Whether the stall is high enough depends on the cam..... where it builds strong torque. We don’t know what level you're looking at for the heads or the cam. Lloyd has a fairly wide variety of options. That's why I qualified all my points in somewhat indeterminate terms. Throttle body, fuel pump, injectors, rear axle depend on HP level.

Interesting you seized on the throttle body..... I have a 58mm TB, LT4 intake opened up to 58mm, and the shop that assembled and tuned the engine showed me, on an engine dyno, that the 58mm was overkill at 500 flywheel HP. Bach calculating, a 52mm TB would have been adequate. They still laugh at my 58mm TB.

Re: Heads and cam

Sounds like a 52 mm TB is all I’ll need. All very good information thank you. I’ve owned this car for 23 years and have never been to serious about upgrading the power level. Honestly I’ve never had a lot of extra money to spend on it. I’ve nickel and dimed the current mods that are on the car. I can now afford to start doing things to the car that I’ve always wanted to do. I’m leaning towards LE -2 heads with the 226/232 cam.
