fuel pump removal
fuel pump removal
I cut the door out of the trunk area and have perfect exposure. When I try to lift it out the lines prevent me from lifting it straight up. Are they supposed to disconnect? They have some wierd fitting that lookes like it is hard to get at to take off. So what do I do? Thanks

Re: fuel pump removal
The lines are the problem. I press in on the two wing plastic pieces and the lines wont seperate. I guess it just takes some serious manipulation. I was just affraid it would take some special tool. Thanks
Re: fuel pump removal
Nope just push in the clips and pull hard.

P.S.- I am strongly against the trap door method. If you are going to replace your pump you should do it right the first time so you never have to worry about it again. Just my .02

Many of us had have troubles with the fuel gauge reading right, or i would hate to find out they sent me a junk pump from the factory and end up pulling it again. Its just retarded to do the mod the long way. I would hate to find that out later and have to drop the tanke

Re: fuel pump removal
I see both sides. I hate that I cant take the tank out and it bothers me that it may bite me later. I do everything by myself and figured I couldnt get the tank down. But I have very little time due to my job and I am also juggleing remodeling my house. Plus I have an elec h20 pump, rotors , wheels, powdercoated intake, p/c h2o case, p/c alt bracket, chrome alt, t top install, and ram air hood, new MSD dig window switch, new ultra lite gauges all sitting in the shop waiting on me. I wanted to get it done by Apr to start going to some car shows. Is there a way to flush the tank with it in? Say pump it out and fill with water and repump then vacuum it out? Thanks
Re: fuel pump removal
O.K, I have everything undone and the hole cut, but I can not get the lines to disconnect, what is the deal. I have pulled and pulled and they will not seperate. Anybody else have this much problem and if so what did you do to finally get them disconnected. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
Re: fuel pump removal
Well, I did the pump replacment with RamAir95TA's write up, went well. Cant really justify pullin the rear end and all that stuff to get the tank out when you can cut a hole, lift it out and then put some sheet metal on the hole, some rtv and your good to go, can even get to it if you have a problem later on. People are worried about fumes, I dont have any and have never heard of anyone having them even if they dont put sheet metal over the hole. Sure the sparks are kinda a bad sign when your cutting, but just put alittle water on it while your cutting, you'll be fine.....ummmm, as for the fuel lines, you punch the 2 clips, i used a pair of long nose needle pliners and the line seperates, remeber to make life easier open the gas tank cap and let the pressure out of the system. Should come out fairly easy....as for the people who are having issues with their fuel gauge after this install.....well, I can say I had this issue. The problem was....the floating bobber that reads the level of the fuel was not swining freely and was getitng hung up on the new hose that connects the pump to the fuel pump assembaly....make sure when you do the install the bobber (thing with the big roller) moves up and down freely, problem solved.
Re: fuel pump removal
I put in a walbro, used the hole in the tank method. Good thing too, that pump started groaning really loud and quit working after a couple days. Pulled it and replaced with a new one in about 15 minutes. I woulda hated to have to drop that tank again if I did it that way
Re: fuel pump removal
I had to cut a little channel to get at the hose disconnects. I had to get plyers in to press the nipples on the line and pull pretty hard. It would have nbeen impossible with out cutting the metal down towards the line connectors.
