Post Car back together and raced a 502 Nova!

Got my tranny back together this weekend and all sorted out (hopefully) and as I was out driving it Sunday I came across a nice little 69 Nova with a big cowl hood and drag radials on the back, it had a very healthy sound to it and everytime we crossed paths (small town) he would rev at me and wave me on. Well the next time I cam to the end of the drag (sonic drive in). I parked it and ordered a coke. Wellas expected he pulls in and parks by me. He engaged in small talk (weather , how ya doing, etc. us Okies are usually freindly). And asked me if I would like to line em up and see what happens, I told him sure but I had a coke coming and to wait for me out a mile (4 line divided highway south of town.) We head out there and play around a little from around a 40 float it was pretty even with him slowly creeping away around 60 then it would stop around 70ish. We finally get out to the spot and the road was deserted (sunday afternoon). He heats up his tires and I clean mine off (street rubber) he tells me he'll give me the leave and he'd wait for me at the other end (lol). Well first run. I give it the gas and blow the tires off but he waits for me to grab ( gives me probably 2 cars ) then he gives it the gas , launches hard and makes up one car then stayes there til the end with me ahead by one. We head back and this time he wants to leave at the same time, I agree and ease on the gas this time and gave him a half a car off the line and he gets another half by the end of the 1/4 resulting in him by one. the third would be the tiebreaker. I pull around and decide to just try and launch as hard as I can on these street meats. result I lose by 2...lol. anyway he was pretty impressed by my small block and shows me what he has, he pops the hood and there rests a 502 crate motor, not sure which one it was but it had cast iron heads. He also had a Demon carb, a th400 and 4.11 rear gears. He had no idea what it run because he just got it together himself. I was pretty pleased with my car, it was the first contest I've had since adding the AFR heads , larger fuel-pump and injectors and having it tuned.

When I went to the track, I wasn't too impressed with the big blocked cars... except that they were cool because they had a big block... besides that the fastest streetable bigblock was only like a tenth quicker then my friends and My small blocks..
You can put less money into a SBC and get way more power... atleast if its carburated.. EFI is only hard due to smog laws... I give you major props

Thanks guys, I agree street racing isnt my first choice, but we live in BFE and there is hardly any traffic down that road (straight and no hills for miles), I think I may be at least a 1/2 a second faster with these heads and the fuel upgrades so if all goes well when I head to the track I should hit high 11s. I think you guys are right I beleive he was expecting 10s with that set-up, it sure sounds like a 10 second car. I beleive if I had had my stickies on that I would have beat him good.

I agree with you that street racing is alright if you are smart about it... do it where no one can pull out in front of you, no one can get hit if you crash, make sure its not a busy area... ie maybe a long straight freeway around midnight? Works for me... found a place with no onramps for a mile or so... and no one is ever on the freeway except in the day!!
Keep safe.

Uhhh... I dont know about that. Just cause you havent seen any quick affordable big blocks, doesnt mean they're not around. The older stock iron headed 502s only made 440hp - approx 352rwhp. But, there are streetable head/cam 502s out there making over 600hp with 8.5:1 compression. Since 502s come with forged internals, they can handle one hell of a power adder and stay on pump gas. How do I know? Well, my dad bought his 68 camaro with a 440hp 502. He's since purchased used Brodix heads, solid roller cam setup with roller rocker arms and stud girdle, all for $1700, then had about a grand of port work done (isnt that about the same price as SB AFR's? alone) He's also topped it with a 350hp NOS progressive system.

Check page 5 - he's got the car running good now - just a little body work left to do.

About small blocks making more power than big blocks, I doubt that. Take my younger brother, he has about $8K-$9K at the most in his 71 Nova(including the cost of the car of $4K) and ran 11.008@126.8 MPH with problems. Worked out the car should run 10.5's-10.6's@131-132 MPH on motor on street tires. Not to bad for a 10:1 BBC chevy weighing in @ 3700 lbs race weight.
