Fuel Pump Question....
Fuel Pump Question....
1997 Camaro SS. Wont Start. Test Fuel pressure at Shrader valve, and get 0 with key on, car off. Fuel Pump does power on, but no pressure. IF you try to start the car (cranking) we get roughly 20 psi. Do you think its the pump, or the regulator? Thanks!
Re: Fuel Pump Question....
The regulator just bleeds off volume to maintain a set pressure. You can't set a standard efi regulator to 0 psi, it can't bleed off that much volume. Your pump is not delivering enough volume to the system. It could be something as simple as a collapsed or blocked fuel filter. It could also be that the pump is worn out and has slowed down to a slow crawl. You can pull the manifold vacuum reference line off the regulator and look for gasoline when you cycle the key. That should alleviate any concerns of a ruptured regulator diaphragm. In the worse case a shop can scope the pump power feed for proper pump rpm.

Re: Fuel Pump Question....
Like stated pull the line from the regulator. Gas should be present while trying to start the car. I usually replace all components in a specific area when one fails. I.E. The plug wires go bad so I replace the plugs. If it were me and I was going to replace the fuel pump i'd grab an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. They aren't all that expensive and pay off in the long run.
