Post The IROC-Z lives!!

With Andy's help, we got the car to fire up, but spraying a bit of either through the PCV & the throttle body, enough that we were able to drive the car and move it around so that it would be easier to tow or load on a trailer.

We did determine that there was no fuel gettting to the motor, so it's time for a new fuel pump.

Anyone do that before? I hear it is quite a job, dropping the rear end, which I can do, and then the tank.

I guess it will give me good experience for the 4th gen. I will need a new pump on that, eventually. Speaking of that, will the 01 fuel pump fit into the 3rd gen? If so, I could do the swap now & just upgrade the 01 now... Hmmm.

Someone here had a tank FS. Who was that, and what was the ticket. If it has a working FP, then that might be the way to go, as I dont know how much rust is in this one.

Hopefully there is no knock in the lower end. I didn't try to get it reved up enough today, just wanted to get it moved around. Any tips from this point, are appreciated. I need to get this things running, someone stole my truck, and I have no transportation.

Do it on a hoist if you can, they are tough but not that bad.
My 4th gen took us 7 hours, but that was with lunch and taking our time.(My friend Ryan did his Walbro on his back in the driveway)
The 4th gen. pump has a hose with a different coupling, use an exacto knife to cut it off at the pump neck.
The electrical connector is different also, you will need to cut and solder, other than that it should work.

Here is a website showing picture on how to replace the fuel pump in 4th gens by cutting a panel out for access to the fuel pump. I am guessing that it would be real close to the same for the 3rd gens.

I did it 2x in 4 days. Its not that bad. All you have to do is get the car up as high as you can, take out the trac bars and drop the tank. Be careful the filler neck will probably come out and its a pain getting it re sealed. It took me only maybe 2 hours to do it, ohhh.... well I didn't have any exhaust on my car at all.

Anyway, its easy as long as you have the tools.

Someone cut up my 86 T/A for a fuel pump access door. They did'nt know where to cut so they just started hacking away. The whole back end of the car was hacked up.I think at least in my car the structural integrity was shot to hell.It was a good thing the carpet covered it up.I always had a slight fuel smell that came up in to the car from the hole. What P!ssed me off the most was when I got the axle down and out of the way.I looked up and saw the trap door.Everything was all rusted up and took forever to get it undone and the whole time there was an acess door.
It is just my opinion,I would drop the rear end and tank instead of cutting up the car.

You don't have to drop the rear end at all! I did the Fuel Pump install 2 times without doing it!

I also swapped out my fuel pump without dropping my axel. It is a little harder on the 98's because the filler necks are steel. The newer ones are plastic so there a little easier to move around and bend. It took me about 2 days in the middle of December in the drive way so it really is not that bad. I would reccomend dropping the tank, not cutting up the car. Just my .02 cents.
