fuel pump bucket???
how important is it to keep the fuel pump bucket? i know that before racetronix some of you that changed to a bigger pump probably just took it out or whatever. any problems with it not being in there?

donno for sure ive just always heard talk about it in our cars...i guess something the fuel pump sits down in i dont know for sure i havent been in my tank yet but will have to go soon...
also can someone tell me where i can find the directions or whatever to do the trapped door method

There is a sump area built into the tank the pump draws fuel from, but removing it would be suicide because it gaurentees an uninterrupted flow of fuel. If you removed it you would have to change the tank to incorperate a bottom sump.
I also don't see how you would get it out of the tank through the 3 inch hole.

The "bucket" is the plastic enclosure around the factory pump. It comes out with the pump/support assembly, because the pump is encased in it. Go to the Racetronix website for their version of why you want to keep it. I'll save you the "search"..... 

The LT1 F-body cars have a pump that is inside a plastic fill-bucket. The fill-bucket's inlet and check-valve system in combination with the fuel pump are designed to draw fuel from the bottom of the tank via suction. This keeps the bucket full at all times and the pump fully immersed in fuel regardless of the tank level so that when the tank is low on gas and you are doing some hard cornering or acceleration the pump does not run dry and start aerating (air bubbles) the fuel. This happens as the fuel sloshes from side to side in the tank leaving the center low on fuel. The F-LT1 cars have minimal to no baffling in them. This can cause detonation and possible engine damage. The bucket also allows the car to operate with lower fuel levels in the tank due to its scavenging effect. The bucket can also effect motor cranking time as the priming time is reduced under certain conditions. The return line from the fuel pressure regulator is diverted back into the bucket via a filter sock inside so that the unused fuel also helps keep the bucket full at all times. Keeping the pump constantly immersed in gas within the bucket can extend the pump's life by not allowing it to be exposed to open air. Open air within the tank contains moisture and in time will cause the pump to rust / seize up especially if left to sit for long periods of time without the tank topped-up (i.e. winter storage). The Racetronix pump assembly is modified so that it will seal in the bucket’s rubber check-valve so that its function is retained.

Keep it. It's easy as hell. Use a dremel/die grinder with a cutoff wheel to take the top off, have to file a few ribs down on the inside then you're done.

But if you're retarded like me and cant remember if you put the little O-ring gasket in the bottom, most epoxys are fuel safe and hold just as well (maybe better?)... Mine didn't say fuel safe though...it said it could be used to patch oil pans, and I was in a hurry so I assumed it was OK... No problems yet after over a year and a half, but I'm still afraid to look..

I never let the tank get below a quarter before I fill it back up so my fuel pump not being in the bucket should not be that bad.
Other than the slightly extended cranking condition I could not figure out.

well, Ive taken mine out. I didnt buy the racetronix kit so I never came across those instructions. it makes sense, so might as well do it. as for people giving feedback that didnt reuse the bucket, I have had NO problems at all, but I keep the tank over 1/4 at all times (I try to anyways
