Fuel odor

Started a little while ago. On cold days and cold starts occasionally I get a whiff of fuel. If I have to jump into traffic and goose it a little I get a dose as well when the car is not warmed up. Have not smelled it when hot or babying the first mile or so. And MPG seems a little off. What's leaking?

Re: Fuel odor

EVAP cannister. It's behind the driver side fender well right nextto the gas filler. It probably wouldn't hurt to get a new gas cap as well.

Re: Fuel odor

Rather than just starting to replace parts (isn't that what we rag on the dealer mechanics for? ), start poking around for the source of the odor. May be a saturated charcoal canister, but it might also be a faulty canister purge system, cracked hoses between the tank and the canister (very common), excessive heating of the fuel by a failing pump, etc.

Do you have cat or cats? (Might want to throw in a little basic info, like the year of your car, tranny type and any major mods.... its really difficult to answer some of these questions, without knowing the year of the car. All LT1's are not identical).

Re: Fuel odor

Thanks for the replies. It is a 96 M6 (102K on the odometer) with long tubes and y pipe, replaced the fuel pump with a racetronix kit two years (~15k miles) ago. Injectors were cleaned at about the same time. Looking at the records, the evap canister has not been changed, but the fuel filter was at the time of the pump. Other engine mods are 1.6 Rs, CAI, dyno tune. No work done on fuel system or engine in awhile that I can point to as suspicious. Any guidance on where to start? I only smell really when moving and cold so hard to pinpoint source. Just my luck, another intermittant problem.

Re: Fuel odor

I'm in the process of replacing my injector o-rings. I had fuel odor and it would get pretty bad sometimes, turns out my brand new SVO injectors o-rings aren't fitting very snug in the rails and seeping fuel. So now I wait for my 23 bucks worth of GM o-rings to come in and hopefully they fit better, I'll know tomorrow for sure.

Re: Fuel odor

I am kind of leaning towards injectors myself, but with a (now) 9 year old car who knows. That is why I am here.
