Aftermarket coolers are of a different design and don't use coolant as the cooling medium. They are more like a small radiator that you would have plumb and mount somewhere. More efficient for cooling, IMO.

Re: Factory Oil Cooler
I have an '95 with a factory oil cooler.
At 96k miles I have had no problems with it.
Even the external oil to air radiator type can plug and are a flow restriction.
The Oil to water factory type are lighter, thermostat controlled and can not be damaged by junk on the road.
If either type plugs, you will risk engine damage, no arugument there.
I am a little puzzled about how the factory filter is supposed to plug since oil flowing through it has already been through the oil fliter.
Unless oil can bypass the filter, some can not sure about the LT1, you should be ok with good oil.
I added the oil to water power steering cooler to my car and have had zero problems with that also.
You want your oil hot, but not too hot. That is why the oil/water is good. Its goal is to keep the oil under 300 degrees or so. Don't need the oil to be cooler than the water.
Judgment call, but I would leave the factory oil cooler on the car.

Re: Factory Oil Cooler
Wait a minute. In a Chevrolet, the oil filter bypass is in the block ahead of the filter and the oil cooler is between the block and the filter. Even if the oil cooler or filter is completely blocked, the engine will not starve for oil, it just won't get filtered oil. I can't see how it would be blocked anyway unless pieces of metal are circulating in the oil system and that is a result, not a cause.
no problems with mine at all on my 94z and it has almost 100k on it and i just cleaned it up before putting it back on my 396. i need to put a oil temp sensor in my canton pan and see what temp the oil is at...and compare to my stock 96 W/O the oil cooler.
