i've got the MSD 8.5's obviously they arn't going to fit in the stock looms.... so what is your advice for heat sheilding for these wires.


now that i looked back i really wish i got a set of taylor full metal jackets but to late now.

do they make any kind of steal boot caps for the MSD's or should i just get the fiberglass woven kind? and as for the rest of the wire some DEI heat tape?

I got mine to fit. They're squeezed pretty tight but they're in there. I also used the metal caps off the stockers. Just had to bend 'em out a little to fit the huge MSD boots.

My Taylors (same size) fit with no problem. I just used a dremel to open up the wire retaining clips a little so I did not stress them. They will fit inside the heat shields. Just make sure you remove the entire assembly (clips, heaqt shields, etc) on each side as a whole unit and carefully rebuild it with the new wires. Everything should go right back into place without problem. The hardest part is getting the wires around the power steering pump. I would recommend removing the alternator to get better access.

Yea, first time is the worst - be patient, but not too patient - have patience, but don't keep trying the same angle over and over again if it doesn't work (even though it may eventually). There is almost always a better angle or position that the first attempt, so keep messing around with it - some may not seem so obvious.

If you don't mind tediously filing (or grinding) the original looms to accomadate the large diameter msd wires you came use those. It pays off in the long run because you won't burn wires running the wires PROPERLY through the factory route.

ok well i got sick as a dog so I had to hold off, just wanted to ask what dremel bit you were using to grind them down with......and did you take the looms off the car or just leave them on.

I don't know how much the SLP socket is, but sears has a tool set called the gear ratchet for like 40 bucks and it comes with a number of pass through sockets. It makes changing plugs a snap.

I got my passenger side done without those SLP or eBay sockets. I figured I should try it before I spend 20 bucks for one. Remove the alternator get #2 from the top. 4 and 6 are easy from the top. 8 I got from the bottom without removing anything. I used a ratchet to get it off and it was all good. Im doing the drivers side tomorrow, hopefully it is easier than the passenger side that took me 6 hrs to do. Like bitchincamaro said, the hardest part is putting in the new wires....

You can get little plastic clips pretty cheap from the local autoparts store to help keep them neat. But if you take your time and run them out of the way from moving/hot parts, you will be fine.

With stock manifolds, heat shouldn't be too much of an issue.
I used a set of 4" hemp/fiberglass stuff boots to protect wires from my headers. Those were pretty cheap from the local parts store too.
