i honestly dont think the MAF is providing enough restriction to matter on a stock car.
sorry, JMO.
until someone has dyno results (after it has be recalibrated for no screen, it will just run a bit leaner without tuning), i say its not even worth the effort.

why is it there? GM bored?

Flow restriction for the 1994 Camaro with LT-1.

CFM

test 1 all stock.......................409

test 2 TPIS air filter................428

test 3 remove first air entry
(that little vent behind the
dr head light)..........................447

test 4 drill 7 holes
in the filter cover......................475

test 5 hi flow elbow between
MAF and filter assembly............535

test 6 remove MAF screen........559

test 7 52mm with air foil...........605

test 8 remove air filter lid..........618

test 9 remove air filer base.......726

so as you can see.. removing the screen DOES increase your air flow, according to them.
just thought id share with you all.
here ya go

Here are the numbers I said I would post earlier...

Flowbench measurements on the MAF (Superflow 300).
Measurements were made at 3" and converted to 28" (water).

(B-body) 3" MAF w/ screen = 670 cfm
(B-body) 3" MAF w/o screen = 808 cfm

(F-body) 3.5" MAF w/ screen = 759 cfm
(F-body) 3.5" MAF w/o screen = 979 cfm

Oh, and GREGG 97Z, I don't currently have the Trans Am anymore Me and a buddy traded vehicles. I got me a red neck 4x4 chevy truck and he got my Trans Am. However, I did end up with another 96SS but I don't have the engine in it right now so it is kinda like only 1/2 a car I guess. LOL!

First, I'll take 200+ CFM of intake flow anyday I can.

Second, GM puts lots of parts on our car that are not always in the best interest of power....example stock cam, muffler, etc. I think the more important question is why does the '02 ZO6 NOT have the screen?

Brent, That's a nice looking truck! I didn't see a shotgun rack in the back window so I wouldn't call it redneck.
So 2 1/2 F-bodies and a pickup now, not bad!

I ported and polished my MAF and I get rough idleing but thats it. I notice more throttle response and actually get better gas mileage then with a regular stock MAF ( I have an untouched MAF that I used to compare). Something else is most likely up with your car. How old is the air filter and what kind is it?

Might this have anything to do w/ the OBDI/OBDII crap? I heard my friend babble something about that and how some people need to reprogram the ECU to run w/o screens.

I've had the the screen out of my MAF for the past 5-6 years as well, and while I don't have any major issues with it, I do have some hidden? ones that I am some what convinced are due to the lack of a screen.

BLM's... Long term fuel corrections...

Sideways, thats a great test you did, but did you notice if your BLM's changed from the MAF switching?

I also wanna do a test like this, as my car runs rather rich... And while there might be other reasons for this (leaking injectors, etc...) I don't feel that there is ANY need to remove the screen and wish I didn't all those years ago...

I also think that the people talking about the Z06's and its lack of screen (I think anyways!!) have to think about how the air duct from the Z06 is... Its straight isn't it?? So it doesn't need a screen to even out the flow... As our ducting goes arounds bends and such, we need something to even out the rough airflow...

I look forward to some testing with a perfectly working stock MAF

I went into this a while ago.... No one wanted to listen to my logic.... Even though I'm a senior ME student who's fairly well versed in Fluid Dynamics.....

But you did stumble upon a HUGE thing... The screen makes a uniform flow across the meter and compensates for all the bends in the tubing... Without the screen you have un-balanced flow across the meter... Atleast in a "typical" setup. A LS1 or WS6 setup is the exception....
