Thumbs down

I ported & descreened my MAF over 3 years ago. Car still gets 17mpg around town and 25mpg on the highway and runs perfectly.

Removing the screen will not cause this UNLESS you damaged the sensor itself.

BTW, I don't think this a worthy mod...However it will not cause problems on an M6 car. I have heard that it sometimes causes a idle problem with A4 cars, but I know of two people locally that didn't experience any problems.

T.P.I.S.(www.tpis.com), did a write up in thier LT-1 Hint book which says:
Flow restriction for the 1994 Camaro with LT-1.

CFM

test 1 all stock.......................409

test 2 TPIS air filter................428

test 3 remove first air entry
(that little vent behind the
dr head light)..........................447

test 4 drill 7 holes
in the filter cover......................475

test 5 hi flow elbow between
MAF and filter assembly............535

test 6 remove MAF screen........559

test 7 52mm with air foil...........605

test 8 remove air filter lid..........618

test 9 remove air filer base.......726

so as you can see.. removing the screen DOES increase your air flow, according to them.
just thought id share with you all.

LS1's come with the same mass air housing, and the 02 and newer Z06's don't have a screen at all.

I know a few mentioned this above, but coming from you LT1 gods all at once is more convincing. What is the best method to clean those MAF sensors, i think mine is dirty/damaged because im throwing codes every so often recently after doing the mod.

I used electronics cleaner on mine, I just cleaned it again recently. I got it at Pep Boys and other people mentioned getting it at Radio Shack. I have heard it is not a good idea to use anything else like brake cleaner, carb cleaner etc on it. I would spend the $5 for the right cleaner to avoid damage to that $3-400 sensor.

I used rubbing alcohol. I heard that removing the screen bumps up your timing a bit??? and in return gives you a few horsies ? My newest LT1 still has the screen. I will dyno with and without it when i dyno soon.

sounds good, electronic cleaner it is . You recommend taking the sensors out of the MAF or too dangerous of a job

Why NOT??? It IS a restriction, even if it isn't a big one. The new Z06 MAF's are de-screened from the factory, meaning GM must not see much of a problem with doing so.

I've had mine descreened for over 3 years and almost 50k miles without any problems.

Now some of you getting these insanely low gas mileage numbers; ever think you might want to DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT??? My car, with 3.73's in my 12-bolt, ported heads and a CC306 cam, questionable O2 sensors that I'll be replacing this year, and a so-so tune, still gets 16-18MPG with mostly highway driving. If I still had the stock gears, it would be getting even better mileage.

If I were only getting 10-13MPG, I'd damn well would be doing something about that; that low of gas mileage gets EXPENSIVE.

Ahhhhhh... Don't worry about Trey. With each post, he decredits himself more and more.

The screen is a restriction.

The aftermarket MAFs don't come with a screen.

!screen is A-OK!

No problems here with the MAF. I have a GMS MAF and I used the ends that came with it. I'm happy
