Do any header coatings really last
Do any header coatings really last
Ive been hearing that jet hots coating doesnt last for more than a year is there any material or coating that will stay looking nice or at least not rustand corrode.
My Jet Hot coated Hookers looked good after one year, but was allways Garaged. I blew up my motor and car sat outside for 2 months. When I removed the engine, headers had corosion and rust on them. I took a Scotch Brite pad over the headers and it knock off all the rust and corosion. Seems it was only on the surface. Then I bought a can of high temp {1'200 deg} silver paint and repainted them...Looks almost good as new.
My headers have been on for 2 years and they were used when i bought them and they are still holding up. The only place they are rusted is the collectors and i believe most will rust there since the collector can spin and take the coating off. They have turned to a dark gray but thats it. I don't know if you can polish them up or not.
My jet hot coated shorty headers started rusting after a few months. I have had them on about a year and half and now I noticed that they are starting to chip. I guess it just depends but the coating is definitely needed.
I have a set of AS&M headers that are at least 5 years old. I bought them used 3 years ago, after they were taken off a blown 383 making 850HP. The "factory" HPC coating is still in decent condition. No rust except one spot where the header vibrated against the steering shaft. They even have an EGT bung that was welded on #7 collector AFTER they were coated, and there is no significant rust around the bung. The coating isn't "chromelike" or even bright silver... just a dull dark silver.
