Depends.... a low res pulse pattern needs to reach the PCM. If the optical sensor is faulty, it can't send the signal. If the harness connector is corroded or the pins are bent, the signal can't get to the PCM.

is this something to worry about?? Stalled out 5 times within 15min, now it seems fine when i drive it

Do you get DTC 16 as a stored code when you scan it? If so, clear it and see how fast it comes back. If its a "once in a while" thing, it may be fairly normal. If it happens "regularly" its an indication the Opti may be failing, or the harness is corroded.
