If I'm not mistaken, the difference is between the location of the pump. One is with the pump in the crankcase and the other is a pump located outside the crankcase(block) like a belt driven or electric oil pump. I believe the nascars use a belt driven pump, or they used to, because I've heard some of the reporters talk of excess rubber picked up from the track sticking to the oil pump belt, making it fly off and burning up engines.

In a dry sump system, ther are typically two oil pumps, or two oil pump circuits.

One circuit draws the oil out of the pan and pumps it to a external reservoir. This prevents the oil from splashing onto the crankshaft, which creates windage, and also aerates the oil (both bad).

The second circuit draws the oil out of the externsal reservoir, and pumps it to the bearings, cam etc.

Quite a few motorcycles use a dry sump system, including most Harleys, many off-road bikes.

Dry sump high end... You are going to get into spending 3k+ on a oil system easy. They really do their job good and can supply lots of good fresh cool oil, and extract lots of oil from the system.

Wet sump lower end will work in 96% of cars reason being most don't care to rev to the moon or have 25k motors in them that they are worried about or are trying to rev to 10k.

I personally choose a middle ground I choose a wet sump external pump setup. I can change the volume or the pressure with the pump to my choosing and I can also supply oil to my turbos alot easier and at a greater volume.

What are you building that you are considering a dry sump system?
