Did I make a mistake with the Opti?
Did I make a mistake with the Opti?
OK so here is the issue hopefully someone has some other thoughts.
In March of this year the coil went and I swapped it out. Then about 2 months ago I changed out the original Opti with a new one from Carquest. A week later the car stalled and wouldn’t start, if it sat it would start, run for about an hour and die. I figured the coil was over heating and replaced it. A week later I replaced the Opti again. I started the car ran for over an hour in the garage went for a drive and it died again. I did some of the testing from Shoebox, and what I could figure out it was no good. So I went and got another Opti. A friend of mine suggested that I take the original Mitsubishi sensor and put it in the new opti. So I did and lock Tic the screws. Installed it and the car won’t start. I did notice that the opti wiring harness had a connector that was pushed in quit a bit, so I pushed the wire back through to get a good connection. Someone has given me another harness to try.
So long story short,
Could the harness be bad or was it a bad decision to replace the sensor in the new opti with the original Mitsubishi one?

OP
don't throw away the "original" opti or the Mitsubishi sensor. The replacement optis are way worse than a original. You can have the original opti rebuilt, including bearing, from this guy:

you start then die when motor gets to operating temp then wont start screams bad ICM

Re: Did I make a mistake with the Opti?
The short (from the gray connector to the Opti) Opti harness connectors vary with the year. 93-94 uses a short connector. 95-97 use a long connector. Is that possibly part of the problem - a mismatch? Short connector will not make contact in a distributor requiring a long connector. “pushed the wire back through” May indicate that's the problem.
Before you install the Opti, hook up the harness connector, wire a ground from the Opti metal case to the engine, key on, rotate the Opti slowly while observing the voltage between the low res signal wire and the harness reference low signal ground wire. It should be switching back and forth between 5 volts and 0 volts. If it isn’t, either the Opti is dead or the harness/connector is damaged.
It might be easier to help you if you could provide basic info about the car..... like the year. It’s really frustrating.

Re: Did I make a mistake with the Opti?
I’m sorry it’s a 97. It has the long connecter which I’m sure you know I’ve changed out the harness and it still won’t start I have even changed out the ICM and still no start hopefully this weekend I’ll be able to look at some more things. No spark. thank you
