The OBD-I LT1's (93-95) do not have a CKP sensor. If you install a 96/97 OBD-II engine, with a crank position sensor, and continue to run the OBD-I PCM, there is no place to connect the CKP sensor, and nothing will happen. Engine runs fine without it.

If you have an OBD-II LT1 (96/97) and install a 93-95 OBD-I engine without the CKP sensor, there will be nothing to hook up to the CKP pin on the OBD-II PCM, and you will get codes for the missing CKP sensor. That will not affect how the engine runs. The CKP codes can be "programmed out" of the OBD-II PCM.

As you noted, it's only purpose is to detect misfires.
