Cooling System Flush - methods?

60k, not sure when flushed last, but figured it's time I do it when back from school.

So, what is the best way to do this? I know some when flushing will open all 3 plugs (radiator and the 2 on the block), while others will not. If you open all 3, the car will have to be on ramps -- or does it? I know the car should be level... Does water wetter really help? Is it best to flush the system with tap water and prestone flush, drain completely, then fill -- or, even if it's just a flush is distilled still preferred?

I searched my question and found these two links - and they refer to exactly what I was talking about (thoguht there was another but I cant find it). Shoebox's seems better since all 3 plugs are out, but are these reacheable w/o the car on ramps? -- and it seems like it could be a pain if I'm having to run the cooling system with water and flush, drain, and repeat as necessary....

What do you guys think?? Thanks!

I used an engine flush kit from checker, worked fine.

Did you pull just the radiator drain or the 2 in the block as well? If I pull the block plugs, the car will have to be on ramps? When should the car be on ramps then and when should it not since the vehicle should be on a level surface?

Re: Cooling System Flush - methods?

Just did mine last weekend. Had it on a level surface and opened the radiator pet-****. Let it drain and put it back in. Then filled it with water and started the car and let it run and drain it while running so the engine pumped empty *watch the temp guage* Do this 3 times and refill with a 50/50 mix of 100,000 mile antifreeze. (don't use the green stuff)

Drained the coolent and left the radiator drain open with the radiator cap off, installed a T in the outlet heater hose that comes from the firewall into the engine, hooked my garden hose to it, turned the hose on all the way and ran the engine for 5 minutes or until the water coming out of the radiator runs clean.
