Can the fuel pump get clogged?
Can the fuel pump get clogged?
I posted a few days ago a problem that started with my car since running it very close to empty then adding three gallons of 94 octane with ethanol then parking the car for almost a week. Someone mentioned that ethanol is very good at cleaning fuel systems but if you've never run it before it could cause problems, this was the first time I'd used it. The car had been running excellent up until this point, now the motor intermitently "cuts out" during WOT runs between 5-6k, it feels like the motor suddenly loses fuel for a split second, then goes again. It doesn't feel like a miss in one cylinder, more like the fuel is cutting out. I just changed the fuel filter thinking that got clogged, but no difference. Today I added some fuel injector cleaner to a full tank today to see if that helps any. If thats not it I was wondering if the fuel pump itself could have gotten clogged by some gunk or something in the tank that was loosened up by running the ethanol? Is there a screen or filter on the pump itself?
Thanks.
Thanks.

There is a little "sock" on the pickup tube that can get clogged pretty quickly if there is junk floating around in the tank. There might also be a screen, but I'm not 100% sure...I didn't get that good of a look at my pump before it went back in.
I'm sure engines should run fine on ethanol, but the fact that it's such a good fuel system cleaner and I've never used it before and now this happens makes me wonder.
I figured there must be some sort of screen or filter on the pump itself, I'm really starting to think it's clogged. Man, I thought I was annoyed getting gas all over me changing the fuel filter the other day, I'm not looking forward to trying to access the damn pump!
Can anyone confirm that their fuel pump screen has become clogged like this before I tear into it?

Has anyone ever had their fuel pump screen become clogged before? I'm thinking of just syphoning the gas out of the tank to hopefully suck out anything loose in the bottom, not sure if that will do it or if I need to remove the pump itself. Anyone have experience with this problem? Thanks.
