a cc503 is about as big as you can go w/o needing head work. Others have gone bigger, but the 503 is about as big as is optimal

you at least will need stiffer valve springs... and might as well do valve seals while it's apart... get some 1.6 rockers to go with it, stronger pushrods and replace the rocker studs.

CC503 is a good cam for non ported heads...

obviously any cam will benefit from ported heads but a cc306 like mine is really choked down by stock heads.. the 503 is a good compromise.. choppy idle, makes decent power and plenty of tuners know the cam so it wont be too hard to tune

You could go as big as you like, but the heads will choke out, CC503 is everyones "cam only" cam.

I'm doing an LT4 Hot cam in my car they are decently choppy and make pretty good power you won't need to do any head work but a gasket match is a very quick easy way to unchoke your heads. do springs rockers and pushrods as well they will boost performance and relaibility

Not only need better springs, but you must make sure that the lift of the cam and the rr's you use do not make the springs used bind. So make sure you measure, measure, measure the spring/valve height to make sure you have enough clearence. With stock valves you may have to use +.050 locks to get the retainer high enough to keep the springs from binding if using Comp retainers and such.

If you really are after the sound as much as anything else, look at Comps "Thumpr" cams. They actually perform pretty well but their claim to fame is a a lopey, rumbling idle. They have early exhaust valve opening, long exhaust duration and therefore a lot of overlap. I don't think they have a specific grind for the LT1, but you could certainly get one on an LT1 core. Any cam with the above characteristics will give a similar sound.

I have a cc306 on a 383 with STOCK heads as far as porting goes.

I do plan on buying a set of heads (or sending mine to Lloyd) in the near future though....
