Bad coil?

Car wouldn't start, started poking around and saw spark coming from all around where the plug wire mounts to the coil. The wire is brand new, coil is old. If the spark is coming out of the coil housing, is it a bad coil?

Re: Bad coil?

What I would suggest is triple checking everything...You say the wire is brand new, Did you just replace plugs n wires? Check the connections between the coil and wire, opti and wire, and check coil and ignition module connections just to be safe..

Re: Bad coil?

The coil is going to fire to through the path of least resistance. F the insulation is broken down, due to age or oil/coolant saturation, the spark is going out there. Check the wire to make sure there isn't anything going on there then replace the coil...

Re: Bad coil?

Or..... if there is a large resistance downstream of the coil wire = corroded Opti coil wire terminal, rotor coming loose, etc.

Re: Bad coil?

Good point Injuneer.
OP, pull the plug wire from the opti and place it about an inch away from the block. If the spark jumps from the wire to the block, your problem is elsewhere. If it jumps from the coil you've found the issue.
