Aluminum for Block Off Plates?

I am removing my EGR system and was wondering if I could use standard 1/4 or 3/8 aluminum stock for the plates? Will aluminum stand up to the heat without warping?

It will work fine...I have used it before for that very purpose and I think mine was only 3/16".

I cut up a coke can and folded it over 4 times. Drilled for holes and siliconed it on. No problem.

Re: Aluminum for Block Off Plates?

might warp if you tighten down on the nuts too much and cause it too bow in the middle? I mean this is If you use a gasket and the gasket "squishes" down tight at either end where the nuts are it might cause a gap in the middle areas because the aluminum is so pliable. make sense?

edit: that's more of a question than a comment

You might want to look at the aluminum block off plate sets sold by SJM Manufacturing. He uses 6016 T6 billet aluminum.

I see your point. I was not going to use a gasket, but just some Hi-Temp RTV sealant.

His plates do look very nice, but I figured I could save myself some $$ and I don't mind making them!

Re: Aluminum for Block Off Plates?

I used a peice of 12Ga aluminun that I bought, cut out the shape using the flange that was on the hose. I put red rtv on the aluminum then put the flange on top of that then put the nuts back on.

I wasn't necessarily suggesting that you buy Steve's plates (I do have a set though ). Just wanted you to see the specs for the material he used, and perhaps the comments he makes regarding gaskets and RTV. The plates he sells are 1/8" thick.

Re: Aluminum for Block Off Plates?

I have a full set blockoff plates to go on my new intake that are made out of stainless steel (had a contact at a local machine shop that has a laser cutter).

One question.... does anyone know the thread type (size) used for the EGR and AIR fittings on the rear of the intake? The intake I am working on had the studs removed when I bought it.

Re: Aluminum for Block Off Plates?

I used TPIS ones, they worked fine and I RTV'ed them in place. Very clean plates with TPIS logo in them.

Re: Aluminum for Block Off Plates?

1/4 inch aluminum will be plenty thick enough. I like overbuilding too.
