Re: Top Speed

The car cannot detect what tires you have on. If it came from the factory with H rated tires, the pcm will limit it to 118mph regardless of what tires you have.

Tire pressure. The book says for running over 100 mph (where legal), to set the pressure to 38 psi or the maximum rated tire pressure on the tires (if the maximum is less than 38 psi). I forget what page, but after seeing the warning on the drivers door, I had to check the book.
I always figured it would be better to have less air in the tires for high speed driving so while the tires are spinning so quickly there's less pressure being applied to the tire. But then again maybe the tire ripples more at such high speed and the extra air keeps it more smooth...What are the physics involving this?

Driving on a flat tire, or one with low air pressure causes the rubber to "bend" each time it reaches the bottom (ground). If you've ever taken a paperclip and bent it back and fourth until it gets hot and finally breaks, you'll understand that the flexing will heat up the tire. If a tire gets too hot, it can shed its tread, or fail completely. So, by running more air pressure, you will reduce the flexing of the tire carcass and reduce the running temperature of that tire. This will reduce the chances of temperature related tire failure.

Re: Top Speed

I got a stock 2002 35th anniversary camaro ss 6 speed with 18k miles(if that matters, which it probably dosnt). I have topped my car out at 162 a few times......definetly a speed limiter at that speed as i felt the motor cut out right at this speed. Guys that see speeds other than this in our years are either going downhill in some degree or got the momentum and looked up at the right time to see their car do above 162. I didnt notice anything too bad in the handling catagory because i was going straight.....i did however get wind leaks like hell, yea i got t-tops. I think these top speed runs are also what did my front rotors in as they were cracked to ****.....soo everyone might want to do a safety check on their rotors. Soo i have to say 162 is what my limiter kicks in at.

Re: Top Speed

When my Z28 was stock, I had it up to 137. When I saw the speedometer approaching 140 and how fast the lights were passing by I left off the gas, I was also running out of road. I think I got it up to 137 in around half a mile, from dead start. I only took my Z up to 115 after my mods, didnt take long to get to that speed either. Its hard to find a place to go so fast for a long time. I pulled mine up to 137 in a 1.2 mile long tunnel in Pittsburgh, Pa. That was about 3 or 4 in the morning after work. Definitely scary, scared me enough not to go that fast again... unless I know the road and its a good day and no traffic.
